Mathematics
Major Requirements
Required courses:
- MTH 121: Calculus I (G)
- MTH 122: Calculus II (G)
- MTH 210: Transition to Abstract Mathematics
- MTH 223: Calculus III
- MTH 226: Linear Algebra
- Five additional mathematics courses at the 200 level or higher, of which at least four are to be numbered above 300 and to include MTH 326: Abstract Algebra or MTH 337: Mathematical Analysis
In addition, the student must demonstrate knowledge of a modern programming language and take a course outside of mathematics which involves a mathematical approach (e.g., physics econometrics, or chemistry). A major must maintain a 2.0 GPA in the courses used to complete the major. Students who are planning to attend graduate school are urged to satisfy the language requirement in German, French or Russian.
Majors will take a writing intensive course approved by their mathematics advisor as their second W-course (exclusive of the First-Year Seminar). Where possible, the course should be in the mathematical sciences department.
Minor Requirements
Required courses:
- MTH 121: Calculus I (G)
- MTH 122: Calculus II (G)
- MTH 223: Calculus III
- MTH 226: Linear Algebra
- At least two more mathematics courses numbered 200 or higher
Knowledge of a structured programming language is also required. The student must maintain a 2.0 GPA in the courses used to complete the minor.
Teacher Certification
Required courses for students seeking certification for teaching mathematics in the secondary schools:
- MTH 121: Calculus I (G)
- MTH 122: Calculus II (G)
- MTH 210: Transition to Abstract Mathematics
- MTH 223: Calculus III
- MTH 226: Linear Algebra
- MTH 326: Abstract Algebra
- MTH 331: Mathematical Statistics I
- MTH 342: Advanced Geometry
- Two electives in mathematics, one of which must be at the 200 level or above and the other at the 300 level or above
- One cognate course in another area which uses a mathematical approach
-
MTH 251: Landmarks of Greek Mathematics (0.5 course unit)
or
MTH 252: Landmarks of Modern Mathematics (0.5 course unit) -
CSI 110: Computer Science I (G)
or
knowledge of a structured programming language
The student must maintain a 2.50 GPA in courses used to complete the major in order to receive certification.
Honors Program
At commencement, the Mathematical Sciences Department awards honors in mathematics to qualified students.
